Metadata and Copyright: My Lightroom Workflow, Part III

This is the third in a series of posts describing how I use Adobe Lightroom to manage the metadata of my photos. Part I is here and Part II is here.

In the first parts of this series I’ve shown how to ensure that your photos always contain the correct metadata pertaining to copyright ad contact information. In this final post, I will talk a bit about preserving said metadata when exporting your images from Adobe Lightroom.

The following screenshot shows a portion of the Lightroom export dialog:

As you can see, Lightroom will always ensure that, at least, the copyright metadata is preserved when exporting an image. I suggest that you choose Copyright & Contact Info Only at minimum.

When exporting in a standard image format, like for example JPEG, the metadata is contained in the so-called EXIF headers. In case you want to check what exactly is included in those headers, exiftool can be used as follows (only showing the relevant lines from the output):

In the fourth and final part of this series, we will examine how the various photo sharing sites and social networks deal with your metadata.
