I discovered Finnich Glen while searching online for places to photograph in Scotland and was immediately attracted to it. Here a small river cuts through the sandstone bedrock to form a deep gully that is completely hidden from view by a copse of trees. Even from the road bridge that crosses the water it is all but invisible.
One has to know how to find the entrance and then descend a series of steps that were put there in the 1800’s but are now almost worn out. The effort is absolutely worth it, because once inside, one discovers a magical place where the river, colored red from the eroded rock, is surrounded by high walls completely covered in green moss.
I would not have been surprised to see elves and fairies down there!
